Case Study: ASRC Energy Services

Background

ASRC Energy Services, LLC. (AES) is Alaska’s leading provider of comprehensive, “above ground” oil and gas services with more than 30 years of experience. It is also one of Alaska’s largest private employers with more than 3,500 employees.

Challenges

  • The majority of AES’s workforce is in the field and in extraordinarily remote locations – ranging from oilfields on the North Slope of Alaska to drill ships where the nearest port of call may be thousands of miles away in Southeast Asia.
  • Some employees don’t have access to a computer or email for weeks at a time, making it difficult for AES to communicate with its workforce.
  • In the oil and gas services industry, it is critical to have an instantaneous and reliable communication tool in case of an emergency or disaster.

Solution

One of the first things to be installed on ships or in remote oil field locations are cellular towers.  As such, since Wi-Fi is available, the company realized that a mobile app solution to communicate with their dispersed employees would be a great way to keep them engaged.  In July 2014, AES launched theEMPLOYEEapp, which they named “TheCrossroad.”

  • Private and secure. Only authorized AES employees have access to the app.
  • Instantaneous upload and dissemination of information.
  • Push notifications appear on home screen of employee’s device when new content is added.
  • Access to a myriad of proprietary company information, including compliance and human resources information, oil and gas activity maps, and cross-departmental educational content.
  • Ability to create groups so that only certain employees have access to specific, targeted information.
  • Multiple administrators who provide information to specific groups of professionals.
  • Company branding (TheCrossroad) throughout the app.
  • Ability to take notes on documents in the app while in meetings.
  • Ability to organize and schedule events through the app.

Results

  • In less than 2 months, AES was able to create and deploy its EMPLOYEE app to its entire workforce.
  • The mobile app has improved company communications and increased employee engagement. It has become a vital tool to help inform employees on complex oil and gas industry news as well as educational and cultural issues related to their company.
  • Feedback from employees shows that they are happy to have an easy way to access company information that they need when they need it.

Sheila Schooner, Communications Manager at ASRC Energy Services:

“Employees are excited to have an easy way to access the company and get what they need when they need it. Employees feel more connected to the company now and it allows us to maintain a relationship with them. It goes a long way towards building company loyalty and improving morale.”

“You don’t have to be the technically-savvy, cutting-edge type of business or have employees with those tendencies to have an app. Certainly, I think all businesses could benefit from it in some way. The app becomes an essential, sustainable tool that is, above all else…useful.”
