In internal communications, we all know that content is king. Regardless of the types of messages or the level of importance or urgency, if the content isn’t engaging, your employees might tune out. But how do you create better content if you don’t have budget approved for graphic designers, video production, and new technology? 70% of comms teams report having annual budgets under $100k, and 34% have less than a $10k budget. This can feel like an insurmountable barrier to producing the best content. But it doesn’t have to be. On today’s episode of ICTV, we want to share a few tools that will help you make a BIG impact on a small internal comms budget.
For video, you don’t need to go pro with an expensive camera and Adobe editing software. You can use your phone to shoot great-looking videos and for editing use iMovie on your desktop or Kinemaster for mobile. Of course, you’ve got to learn how to shoot and edit video with your phone. There are a ton of resources online for that. One of our favorites is PhoneVideo101.
Not ready to tackle video, but want to create more authentic communications? Try podcasting! Our favorite free software to record and edit audio is Audacity.
For graphics, you don’t need to be an InDesign or Photoshop pro. Check out Canva to make infographics, branded docs, design templates, and more.
Finally, editorial calendars are a MUST because they keep you organized, they help build cross-functional teamwork, help to build a system to track results, and they allow you to plan ahead, building efficiencies and giving teams more time to create the content they’ll need. With all that in mind, try some of these great, low-priced options. Google sheets. SmartSheet. And AirTable–this tool pairs with Zapier to let you schedule social media posts, MailChimp emails, and much more!
You don’t need a big budget to make a big impact in internal communications. Getting the right tools and learning how to use them is the key to stretching any budget.
