Did you know that there are nearly 3 billion people in the global workforce who are deskless? Those who don’t use computers in their daily work and don’t necessarily have company emails or an intranet?

Think about manufacturing line employees, housekeepers, parking attendants in hotels, store clerks, and nurses. When it comes to easy access to communication, these folks historically have been neglected.

But the next generation of workers has told us enough is enough. On today’s episode of ICTV we take a deep dive into theEMPLOYEEapp’s Class of 2019 survey.

More than one thousand high school and college grads were asked what they expect from employers with respect to flexible work options, communication, and technology. Nearly half of the graduates surveyed (45%) classified themselves as about to start deskless jobs. In fact, a study by Blueface finds that remote work will equal or surpass traditional office work by 2025.

So, why do most companies focus on workers who are tied to their desk? According to Ragan’s State of Internal Comms Report, email, team meetings, and intranets are the most commonly used internal communications channels.

But wait! What about the “deskless” – How are they supposed to receive information? Many of the deskless grads surveyed said they want more communications from their leaders. And, just like those who will be sitting at a desk, they said they want easy access to benefits (50%), payroll (46%), and training (38%) information.

Bottom line? Gen Zers grew up in a 24/7 news cycle, with access to information at all times, and they expect the same at work. Unlike ever before, employees want communication and resources at their fingertips and immediately regardless of whether they work behind a desk or not.

So, let me ask, how should you shape your internal comms and the delivery of it to meet your employees’ expectations? How will you adjust to a growing deskless and remote workforce Maybe it’s time to rethink how we communicate given what our employees are asking for?
